How to Reset Mac Keychain

The macOS Keychain is a really useful feature. It allows you to automatically store all the passwords you usually use on your Mac, so every time you need to access a website or a service, there will be no need to type in the data to Login. However, in some cases, you will need to reset the Mac Keychain. For example, if you have forgotten your Mac password and reset it, you will no longer be able to access and use the Keychain since the Mac password is also the Keychain password.

Resetting your Mac Keychain will permanently erase all passwords saved within it. Therefore, I recommend that you carry out this procedure only as a last resort or, in any case, if you are not interested in the data saved in the Keychain.

The procedure for resetting the Keychain is very simple. We describe all the steps to take in detail in the next paragraphs of this short guide.

How to reset the Mac Keychain

As previously written, this procedure will delete all the passwords saved inside the Keychain, so use it only if you are aware of what you are doing since once the Keychain is reset, you cannot recover the saved data.

Here are all the steps to take to reset macOS Keychain:

  • Press the CMD + SPACE keys from the keyboard to open the Spotlight search;
  • In the Spotlight search form, type “Keychain,” then click on “Keychain Access” ;
  • After opening the Keychain window, click on the “Keychain Access” item, present at the top left of the menu bar, then click on the “Preferences” item ;
  • In the window that opens, click on the “reset my default keychains” button ;
  • Type in the password you use to unlock your Mac and click the “OK” button.

All done! You have now reset the Mac Keychain, and its password is in sync with your Mac’s.
