How to Add a Folder with Recently Opened Files to the Mac Dock

If you want to always have at your fingertips a sort of virtual file containing all the apps, files and folders opened recently, follow the guide that we offer you with this article. We offer an ingenious system to access these files with a click directly from the Mac Dock.

Basically, you are going to create an intelligent folder to be placed among your favorite applications. First, you need to right-click on the “Finder” icon and select the “New smart folder” option (alternatively, you can click the same item from the Finder menu in the menu bar, or use it directly with the keyboard shortcut “Alt + Cmd + N”).

How to use the Smart folder for this purpose

At this point, it is necessary to click the “+” button visible in the bar at the top right, then in the drop-down menu containing the item “Name,” select the option “Last opening date.” In the adjacent drop-down menu, you can select the time limit, from a “in the last X days” where X is a number that you type at will, or by choosing preset options such as “today,” “yesterday,” “this week,” and so on.

After configuring the folder according to your preferences, you need to click on the “Save” button at the top right. Rename the folder and save it on “Desk.” Now, you just have to drag it to the Mac Dock and delete the copy on the desktop.

The final touches are optional. By default, the preview of the new link shows the icon of the last opened files, but by right-clicking and selecting the “Folder” item in the “Show as” panel, the icon will be static and will have an aspect closer to that of a filing cabinet. Also, play with the “Grid” and “List” options, as well as the various options for sorting the files according to your preferences.
