Downloading music, uploading photos to the cloud, sending large files by mail, watching a movie, uploading a web page, or any other task over the internet can become an odyssey if your computer’s upload and download speed is not enough. With Windows 10, it can be improved with a few tricks.
Below we explain different ways to configure Windows 10 on your computer to gain a little more internet speed at home. You will be able to carry out heavy tasks through the network without the browser freezing.
Close all other windows and programs
You may have several windows open or other programs that are also using the internet connection to carry out their work. If you need more speed for a certain task, you should block those other windows that serve as a distraction for your computer.
This way, you can check which of these programs is accessing the internet and limiting the download speed of your network. The process is as follows: Settings> Network and Internet> Data usage
Disable medium usage connection
If you set a data limit, Windows will set an intermediate connection setting. This will help you avoid exceeding that limit in no time. This means that the system is slowing down the use of data that you do to save.
follow these steps: Settings> Network and internet> Change Network Properties> Medium usage connection
Disable background apps
If you want faster upload and download speeds to surf the internet smoothly, your computer may need to focus on a single task. By closing the rest of the applications that are giving work to the device in the background, you allow the computer to concentrate all its power and capacity on that task you need.
Follow these steps: Settings> Privacy> Background apps
Use a wired connection
Wireless connections are more stable and faster every day. However, you can change it for an Ethernet connection if you have speed problems. These cable options are usually more reliable and provide higher speed than the router that does not reach the room where you are or is saturated with many other devices at home.
Change to another DNS
The DNS servers (Systems Domain Name) are essential for surfing the internet. Its function is to translate a web address you want to enter an IP address. You indicate to the computer to which server to connect to access that page. They usually come by default on your computer. You can improve your upload and download speed depending on which one you use.
Open DNS and Google DNS promise great speeds. They also provide important security measures to prevent phishing attacks and other risks on the Internet. Open DNS also allows you to configure your browsing more extensively.
To choose the DNS server you want, the process is as follows: Control Panel> Networks and Internet> Click on your Ethernet connection> Properties> Select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4)> Properties> Use the following DNS server addresses > Enter the following code according to the DNS you choose:
Google DNS: Primary and Secondary DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Open DNS: Primary and Secondary DNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
